week one: partial objects

According to Melanie Klein, partial objects are the earliest ways that humans recognize the difference between themselves and not themselves. Klein theorized that the subject begins by relating to part of a person before she begins relating to another as an autonomous being. The partial object series is a group of objects that require the observer to make an action that draws attention to their own body as that action causes an object to animate.

1. Sawhead

This is my first project for video sculpture. The piece consists of a saw, a wooden arm and hand, and a cloth object. Sawing the arm causes the denim object to glow and sigh. I don't have the wiring done yet, so this is just an example of what it will look like. Also the sound isn't working yet. The denim object sewn from a mangled pair of jeans and stuffed with 5 lighbulbs and nylon stuffing.

Here it is.

here's the sawing in action.

here's a close up of the object.
