In Fall 2019, I taught a First Year Seminar called Downtown NYC. In it, we did an archival project at the Fales Archive of NYU Special Collections. We started off with a visit to the archive where curator Nicholas Martin introduced us to the archive. Then, curator and ethnomusicologist Dr. Tamar Barzel visited the class and gave a workshop on primary sources. Students then returned and spent time in the library with archival objects they had requested. For their final projects, students visited the archive by themselves and developed readings of three archival objects of their choosing. Their projects are available to see here.
